Triggers and symptoms of allergies

Allergology deals with the overreaction of the immune system to substances that are harmless in themselves.
Allergens can take many different forms, such as allergies to dogs or cats, asthma, house dust or intolerances to medication or food, and can make life difficult for children.
Insect venom and hay fever also often trigger allergies.
Around 30% of Europeans suffer from one or more allergies.
In addition to mild symptoms such as a skin rash or runny nose, an allergy can also have serious consequences such as breathing difficulties or anaphylactic shock, which in the worst case can lead to cardiovascular arrest.
An allergy should therefore always be taken seriously and treated.

Allergology measures – allergy and lung function test

Before an allergy test, the pediatrician will have a detailed discussion with the patient and their parents or guardians.
They will ask questions about the allergy gesture, such as its frequency and severity, as well as possible family history, as allergies can be inherited.
If both parents are allergic, there is a 50-60% chance that the child will also develop an allergy.
After clarifying the facts, the pediatrician carries out an allergy test to find out which substances the patient reacts to and how strongly.
Further treatment steps are then discussed.
The lung function test measures, among other things, the lung volume and the oxygen uptake of the lungs.

Hyposensitization as a long-term treatment method

Allergology relies on hyposensitization to control allergies in the long term or, at best, to eliminate them completely.
The treating doctor administers extremely small amounts of the allergy-causing substance to the child, either via an injection, tablets or drops.
The amount of the substance is gradually increased until the immune system has become accustomed to it.
This prevents an allergic reaction in the future.
Hyposensitization has the best chance of success if the allergy has not been present for long.
The results are therefore particularly good in children and adolescents.
Treatment often lasts for several years.
It is worth persevering, as 80% of people can live symptom-free.
